General information about the Myvatn Lagoon

The Myvatn Nature Bath is located in the heart of the northeastern part of Iceland, about 105 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Lake Mivatn and its surroundings are one of the greatest natural treasures in Europe. The Myvatn Nature Reserve is a fragile nature, the Icelanders have managed to create an excellent tourist infrastructure, without much negative impact on nature and even more so without destroying the delicate ecosystem.

The Mivatn baths offer natural steam rooms and pools. The entire thermal complex was built on a fault in the earth's crust with geothermal water extracted from a depth of 2500 meters. All this together provides excellent leisure opportunities and a unique experience. The Mivatn complex also offers the services of a cafe and restaurant, which can serve up to 120 guests at a time with the possibility of accommodating 50 outdoor seats. So if you are going to celebrate some kind of celebration in Iceland, take note of this place.

The water for the lagoon comes from the well of the National Energy Company in Bjarnarflage. The water temperature is about 130°C, it enters a huge pool next to the lagoon itself, forming an impressive artificial hot spring. In total, the lagoon and pool contain about 3.5 million liters of water with a temperature of 36-40 °C.

The Mivatn lagoon itself is an artificial structure, the bottom of which is covered with sand and gravel. The characteristics of water are unique in many ways. It contains a large amount of minerals, is alkaline and is well suited for bathing. Due to their chemical composition, unwanted bacteria and vegetation do not reproduce in the lagoon, which makes chlorides or other disinfectants redundant.

Geothermal water in Iceland usually contains a little sulfur. In this area, the amount of sulfur in the water is even higher than in others. Therefore, you should avoid getting jewelry made of brass or silver into the water, they turn black and can be damaged. However, sulfur is believed to have a positive effect on asthma and other respiratory diseases, and many trace elements in water have a positive effect on the skin.

The Mivatn thermal springs are the second largest and most popular in Iceland after the Blue Lagoon, which is located near Reykjavik:
